Established during the Great Depression, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts strives to collect, preserve, exhibit, and encourage the study of the arts. Its remarkable collection features nearly 50,000 artworks spanning 6,000 years of history. If you would like to see unique pieces from around the world, take a virtual tour of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Here is some of what you can enjoy from our Clarendon apartments:
African Art Collection
The African Art collection is one of the country’s most comprehensive collections of its type. The works span from the first millennium BC through the present day. They showcase more than 100 cultures throughout the continent, and many portray key cultural and historical narratives. Highlights include beaded aprons, royal headdresses, and nineteenth-century masks.
East Asian Art
Featuring more than 4,500 years of visual history, the East Asian art collection highlights artists from Japan, Korea, and China. Don’t miss the work of Hasui Kawase. Hailing from Tokyo, he began his artistic career by studying Japanese-style painting. He exhibited by 19, and later turned his focus to woodblock printing. Many of his works were destroyed during the earthquake of 1923. Today, the pieces that predate this event are scarce and in high demand.
Native American Art
A fascinating exhibit, the Native American art collection, showcases the Plains, Northwest Coast, Arctic North, and other geographical regions. It features colorful pieces, and “illustrates the long history and importance of artistic production among Native people.”
