After climbing in the Himalayas, Chris Warner began his entrepreneurial spirit by taking people to the mountains. But when he became trapped during a blizzard on Denali, he began planning an indoor climbing gym. That’s how Earth Treks was born. It offers over 45,000 square feet of climbing and fitness and features more than 400 roped routes and boulders, and diverse terrain. The gym is ten minutes from our Arlington apartments, and the daily rate is $26. 

Earth Treks also offers classes for everyone, from novices to seasoned pros. Beginners start with Introduction to Rock Climbing. This hour-long session allows students to learn belay techniques and the basics of knot tying in a laid-back setting. 

Spotrock Climbing Centers 

Built for climbers by climbers, Spotrock was one of the country’s first climbing gyms. The founders met at a handmade climbing gym inside an unused auto garage. They strive to provide a fresh experience and offer world-class routes and exceptional educational programs. Spotrock features the tallest walls in the Mid-Atlantic and the only multi-pitch training ledge in the United States. 

Visitors looking to enhance their skills can try an array of classes, including Level 1 Movement. Designed for all abilities, this two-hour session covers proper body positions and how to create basic bouldering workouts. The gym is 26 minutes away, and an adult day pass is $20 plus shoe rental.
